What if they find out my current earnings are low?

2008-11-14 by

They know you had low prior earnings? It could cost you the job or leave you open for a lowball offer. Your strategy to neutralize this is: early in the interview, say, “It’s too early for substantive talk about salary, but I think you’ll agree that I’m lower than other candidates, right? Well, I know I’m underpaid. That’s one of the biggest reasons I’m looking – to get my earnings more in line with what the actual salary averages are. I presume you’re most interested in how well the candidate can do the job more than picking the least expensive candidate, is that a fair statement? [Yes, of course.] Okay then I’m sure we’ll have no problem getting something competitive when the time comes.” Then switch the topic of conversation. “I know that top performance is what counts, in the end. What’s the biggest problem you have related to this position?”

Track your accomplishments

2008-11-07 by

Employers want to see what you have achieved, and they want to see quantitative (not just qualitative) evidence that you have made a difference. Start keeping records of your achievements and how they have impacted the bottom line.

TaxMama note: One one job, I started keeping a log that tracked how much income I personally generated for my employer. When it came time for a review, I was able to present specific information to demonstrate my worth to the company. Do you think it made it easier to get a worthwhile raise?

Actually no. The raise offered was so insignificant that I honestly thought they were just joking. They were joking, right? They weren’t. But it did prove to me just how valuable my skills were – so I quit and built up my own practice quite easily. Many of the old firm’s clients followed me – and are still with me today.

Note to employers: Pay attention to the value your staff brings to you. They’d rather work for you and move up to partner than have to leave and become competition. Treat your staff well.

Remember to Smile

2008-10-31 by

Don’t be so nervous in interviews you forget to smile. The best natural cure for nervousness is preparation and the confidence that comes from having a compelling, quantified track record that demonstrates your potential. Another great cure for nervousness is to share your personality and passion for the job. Remember, employers want to hire people who are passionate and love what they do.

Continue to Network With the Hiring Authority

2008-10-23 by

When a job seeker is passed over for another candidate, they often feel that this signals the end of the relationship with the hiring manager. But the reality is that many employers continue to keep track of their “silver and bronze medalists” and will consider them for future positions within the company. If you don’t receive a job offer that you expected, put your feelings of disappointment aside long enough to create a strategy for continuing to network with the hiring authority that you have already spent significant time cultivating a relationship with. A great job opportunity can happen at any time! Don’t burn any bridges or squander any opportunities to continue to communicate with decision makers at a company you are interested in.
