Ask TaxMama Issue 519 - Happy Labor Day Weekend

Happy Labor Day Weekend - and learn about the origins of Labor Day

Dear Family,

Well, here we are, it’s already Labor Day weekend. The unofficial end to summer. For some, even children (remember way back then?), it comes as a relief. Too much goofing off can become tiresome. Though I could dearly use a month with no responsibilities whatsoever. Couldn’t you? But, do children these days even get the luxury of goofing off? From what I hear from parents, their children lead totally structured lives, going from one lesson or activity to another.

I remember my early teen summers. Take a city bus to summer school in the morning. (Don’t be shocked. Back then, kids actually rode the public bus and didn’t have to be supervised and transported everywhere by smothering adults. And nothing bad ever happened to us. Unless of course, you consider the lady who worked at the SEE’s Candy plant sharing her chocolates with us, as a bad thing.) Then I’d rush over to the public pool – Gardner pool, and swim and dive for 2-3 hours. Walk the 3/4 mile home. Clean the house, and get dinner ready to put on the table by 5:00 pm when the family came home. Oh yes, dinner together was mandatory. There was no discussion whatsover about being elsewhere for dinner, unless you were at another family member’s dinner table. Though my brothers could invite friends to dinner. Or folks were welcome to drop in. There was always enough food to welcome extra people.

Homework came after clearing the table and doing the dishes. Sometimes, having my Dad drive me to Gardner library. And I could usually get a ride back from someone – generally one of the cute guys studying there.

Yup, I miss those summers. What was your summer like back in your ‘carefree’ teen days? Tell us.

Ah nice memories. Back to today, though. There’s no legislation coming out of Washington right now. Potential from Obama, about the health care plan. We are waiting to see what happens with the Taxpayer Certainty and Relief Act of 2009 proposal. It would establish new limits for the estate tax exclusion and clarify other estate tax issues. But, let’s wait until the Legislature returns.

Meanwhile, California is burning. We do that every year. Perhaps not to this extent. But California is like a Phoenix. We burn up every few years and come back all refreshed and new. But boy! Look at all the Presidentally declared disaster areas in several California counties.

I’ve started hearing rumors that people who have not needed to file tax returns (and haven’t), are getting notices from the State of California about why they haven’t filed. (Remember, TaxMama always says to file whether you need to or not!) Have you received such a notice? Or do you know anyone who has?
