Ask Taxmama Issue 457 - Polar Bears, Marriage, Disasters

2008-05-16 by

Happy National Safe Boating Week

Dear Family,

There’s so much happening in the world these days.

First the good news. TaxMama® is now an official trademark!
I was a little late filing for it and ran into a bit of a conflict. But with the help of Doug Ansell at Incorp Now and his trademark attorney John E. Russell at allmarktrademark.com – all the problems are resolved. TaxMama® is official!

Then the bad news.

The polar ice cap is melting – see satellite pictures.

Aside from polar bears being added to the endangered species list, the planet’s weather and earth movements are getting more powerful and damaging.

Myanmar’s cyclone kills thousands of people and endangers wildlife, while the military junta prevents aid from reaching those who need it.

People still buried under rubble in China’s earthquake.

If you have any favorite charities or sources that provide help to these folks, please let me know. I’ll post them.

The California Supreme Court just legalized and dignified same-sex marriage. Couples will be able to marry in 30 days.

As you may know, I’ve been writing about the tax implications of same-sex registered domestic partners. I’ll be updating the information for next week’s MarketWatch article. The Federal income tax and estate tax issues will still be a nightmare. Think twice before rushing to the altar.

Postage rates have just gone up again. First class mail is 42 cents. Stop buying stamps. Instead, print them when you need them, so you don’t have to keep buying the interim, make-up postage. This has saved us a ton of time – and money.

Since hurricane season is coming up in the US, IRS has released Hurricane Preparedness Information. You’ll find the resource in today’s IRS News – along with information for small businesses.

Spidell’s Caltax.com sent out a note to alert everyone that California’s Franchise Tax Board is once again sending out balance due notices to people who filed electronically and paid their taxes due by April 15th. If you got one of those notices, Spidell suggests you go to www.ftb.ca.gov and click on My FTB Account. Follow instructions to access your account to see if the payment was posted.

Summer Family Identity – 3 Choices:

Zazzle – Cafe Press – Queensboro

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.

(DO NOT PUT ANYONE’S NAME ON THEM – you’re just asking strangers to kidnap your children!)

But do put everyone’s picture – so even if you don’t know the local language, you can point to a family member and ask if anyone has seen him or her. Or use a graphic or piece of art you all like. You’ll find three options right here in our SPECIAL DEALS section.

Use your art or others – and customize it

  1. Roberta Says:

I was under the impression that the tax stimulus is an advance on a possible refund. The info below is from IRS.Gov and has me confused Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008? A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
