Ask TaxMama Issue 477 - What Can YOU do to Help

2008-10-10 by

Happy Tax Deadline Weekend

Dear Family,

The last few days before the final deadline for 2007.
(Note: See the extended deadlines for Presidental Disaster areas)

If you want your Stimulus Rebate check before next year, be sure to file your 2007 tax return by October 15th. For other reasons to file, even if your information is still up in the air? See this week’s TaxQuips.

Well, it’s been a week since the Legislature was persuaded to sign the Bailout Bill that was meant to stave off financial disaster and increase worldwide confidence in US markets. So, how did we do?

Let’s see what MarketWatch has to say today, shall we?
http://www.marketwatch.com/

The Dow Jones Industrial index is down below 8,000 – the lowest point since 2003.
Nikkei slumps to end week with 24% loss
European shares plunge as global rout accelerates
French CAC-40 down 10.3%, German DAX down 8.7%, FTSE 100 down 6.8%
Detroit Automakers talk about bankruptcy

OK, my friends, the country’s economy is in trouble.
In fact since the world is tied to our economy in so many ways – they’re in trouble, too.

Many states’ unemployment coffers are running out.

This is really scary. Several people have told me their retirement funds have lost half their value. Others are happy to have only lost 5%. At this rate, Social Security will be plundered to cover other government shortfalls.

It’s time for US to do something about taking care of our own local or national problems.

  • What ideas do YOU have to help your neighbors, local schools or schoolchildren, unemployed folks in your community or industry, seniors, those with disabilities? I am gathering positive solutions and tips for ways people can band together to help their communities survive. ***

I’d like your help to make a positive impact right now – and to bring people together.
Please send your notes to taxmama@taxmama.com – be SURE to put POSITIVE IDEA in the subject line.

We’re going to take your ideas and spread them nationally to bring hope back.

Our Job Advice of the Week teaches you how to apply the real estate concept of ‘Location! Location! Location!’ to your job search – naturally applying the concept to something more relevant to job hunting. What is that? Read on:

In today’s Money Funny you’ll get Forrest Gump’s take on the whole financial crisis and bailout.

Today’s IRS News comes to you courtesy of David and Mary Mellem, who explain Congress’newest definition of a child, for tax purposes. Not quite the clarity and improvement one could hope. But the Mellems do an excellent job outlining the issues. Also, see the IRS’s announcement about electronic filing deadlines and late filing deadlines in the Presidentially Declared Disaster Areas.

In TaxQuips this week we learn how the Gift Tax exclusion works, the special provisions for casualty losses in Presidentially Declared Disaster Areas, and why it’s not good to skip the October 15th filing deadline – even if you’re not ready.

As always, we love your feedback, opinions and ideas.
You are what makes all this fun – and interesting!

Summer Family Identity – 3 Choices:

Zazzle – Cafe Press – Queensboro

Since it’s summer, and you’re probably going to be traveling with your family, consider getting matching T-shirts and/or hats.

(DO NOT PUT ANYONE’S NAME ON THEM – you’re just asking strangers to kidnap your children!)

But do put everyone’s picture – so even if you don’t know the local language, you can point to a family member and ask if anyone has seen him or her. Or use a graphic or piece of art you all like. You’ll find three options right here in our SPECIAL DEALS section.

Use your art or others – and customize it
