Ask TaxMama Issue 485 - Celebrating...in Moderation

2008-12-05 by

Happy aftermath of Thanksgiving

Dear Family,

It’s only about a week since Thanksgiving. And all the leftovers are probably consumed or trashed. But we’re starting a whole round of holiday parties, in the office, at home and with friends. There will be millions of wondrous, glorious calories consumed this time of year, with all the eggnog, pfeffernuss, glögg and other local traditions. Taste it all! In moderation. You still want to love yourself when the holidays are over.

I hate that word. Moderation. My mother always preached that. Now look at her. Deeply into her 80s. Still fitting into the same clothes she bought 30 years ago. (And no, they aren’t frayed or old-looking. She knows how to keep fabrics looking just fine…darn her.) She’s still cooking wonderful foods for us, that she barely even tastes. Yes, there are pains – some horrible pains, like from sciatica, and the aftermath of some fool who ran her over in a cross-walk several years ago. Other than that, she’s in much better shape, mentally and physically than many of her richer, more beautiful and glamorous (once upon a time) friends. Sheesh, you’d think I’d have learned something from her. Not a chance. Do we ever really listen to our mothers? Well, perhaps it’s time to start!

Monday morning started with the radio interview with Jim Blasingame, where we started to talk about things a business can do to survive in this reduced economy. Some of the concepts involve moderation. Some involve taking drastic, realistic steps. Others are fun!

  1. Fernando Rios Jr. Says:

Dear Taxmama, In October 2007 my daughter, her husband and their daughter moved in with me. In April 2008 my daughter’s husband walked out on his family and moved in with girlfriend. My daughter and my granddaughter have continued to live with me until the present. I have not received any monetary aid from any of them at any time. I have told my daughter that I would be claiming my granddaughter as a dependent on my 2008 tax year. My daughter says that I cannot do this without written consent from her husband and her. I have copies of lease contracts which my daughter, her husband and my granddaughter as members of my household. Please explain to me what my options are. thank you and have a happy new year….fernando
