Ask TaxMama Issue 520 - Honoring 911 Weekend

Honoring 9/11 and the brave who helped

Dear Family,

First a moment of silence – pray for those who died, and those who helped on 9-11. If you’re interested, there’s a memorial site to honor all those involved and to look towards the future.

DEADLINE! Remember there are filing deadlines next Tuesday, September 15th. BIG deadlines. In the past, only corporate returns would have been due. Under a change in procedure, we now have to finish partnerships, estates and trusts, as well. Are yours done? Did you turn over all relevant data to your tax pro? If not, do it NOW!

It’s been a turbulent week, with President Obama’s health care plan, with the resignation of a California legislature whose extra-marital sexual activities with lobbyist, no less, we outed when a private conversation was accidentally taped. Then there was the incredible rudeness of REP. JOE WILSON, R-S.C. who shouted out “You lie!” during the President’s speech – and has not only NOT apologized on the House floor where he made the outburst, but has had the gall to use it as a push to try to raise campaign money.

Folks, this kind of behavior is not about freedom of speech, or about disagreeing with Obama or his policies. This is about common decency and courtesy, and yes, old fashioned good manners, before the President of the United States. While this reprehensibly, immature Representative may have the right to his say, the floor of Congress during a presidential speech is the not the place. In some cultures, or some older times, it would have been considered treasonous and resulting in physical punishments, or worse. Whether you agree with his point of view or not, personally, anyone engaging in that kind of behavior, so inappropriately, is not fit to be a member of such an august body. The House Ethics Committee should be issuing sanctions against him.

Of course, there are many in the Federal or State legislatures who don’t belong there for a variety of more serious reasons. Having an affair is not one of those reasons. Having affairs with lobbyists who are trying to get your vote on issues – well, that’s a good reason. The odd thing about the reports about this fool’s affair is the contradictory information people revealed. On the one hand, they say that everyone in and around the California Legislature was aware of the affair. Yet, back home everyone thought California Assemblyman Mike Duvall

was a totally upstanding, man and good Republican (yes, someone said that), whose campaigns were based on family values. Huh? I’m confused.

Anyway who has time to care about other people’s foibles? We’re not perfect. I am certainly not. Who knows what I will learn about myself someday? Perhaps I am hiding something so deeply, even I don’t know about it. (Which reminds me about a Jenny Craig counselor who so badly emotionally abused by her boss that suppressed childhood memories surfaced about her father abusing her and her twin sister…but that’s another story.) Have you ever noticed how your mind takes you places you never plan to go?
