Be Polite to Everyone

In an interview situation, remember you are constantly being evaluated by all with whom you come into contact. Be polite to everyone from the security guard to the receptionist, and do not do anything out of the ordinary or unprofessional.

In 2002, a friend in New York City had interviewed a potential attorney and was about to bring him back for a second round of meetings when she discovered that this candidate had apparently been self-conscious of his bulky winter coat and decided to try to stuff it in a newspaper bin in the building lobby before the interview (an action that caused some distress with building security). When the security guard relayed the behavior to my friend, the candidate was immediately crossed off the list of possibilities.

    On a daily basis, I find myself talking to dozens of potential clients. Many times, it takes great strength in keeping my composure, especially for those who are tax protesters.

    Whatever reason for their neglect in filing tax returns, I find that all they really want is for someone to just listen to their plight.

    Patience and kindness is always the best way of winning over their confidence and calming them down. You may not agree with their reasoning but you always need to remember to be polite and professional. Winning their respect and trust is your best selling point.
