Research Your Interviewers

2008-09-12 by

You might discover that they have written articles or were interviewed for a major trade publication. You might also find that you have similar personal interests and hobbies. In the interview, mention that you read their article or enjoy the same activities, and you’ll certainly score a few brownie points.

Be smart with email.

2008-09-05 by

Be smart with email. Some email providers or ISPs have such rigid spam filters that a recruiter’s email inquiry may get blocked. If you’re using an email provider that requires the sender to verify his/her message before it is delivered, you’re running a risky job search because recruiters just won’t go through the trouble. There are too many other candidates out there for them to waste their time trying to get around your spam filter.

Focus on your expertise

2008-08-29 by

Remember, by trying to be something to everyone, you end up being nothing to anyone. Focus on your expertise. Employers need to be confident that you are absolutely the right choice to help them excel over their competition. They need to know that you will not have a learning curve at their expense. Prove that you are a specialist who will get the job done to stand out as the first choice solution.

Create a job search business card

2008-08-15 by

Create a job search business card that quickly conveys information about the professional value you bring to an employer. Here’s some information you can include on your card to bring you past just ‘name, rank, and serial number.’

Build a web resume and add the url to your card.
  • Include a link to your Ladders or LinkedIn profile.
  • Use the back of the card to elaborate on your core competencies or market differentiators.
  • Add a professional headshot.
  • Link to information on a speaking engagement or an article or book you have published or written.
  • Create a virtual business card at Plaxo to use as your email signature line.

You Must Work From Home

2008-08-08 by

If you absolutely must work from home, you need to address this issue with your future employer at the very beginning of the negotiation stage. Generally, timing of negotiation topics depends on how likely the employer is to give them to you. And since working from home is a deal-breaker, you want to get it handled right away—even before the routine negotiations like salary. This strategy would apply to any job essential: you must have an office, not a cubicle; you need certain software to do your job; your travel must be limited to a certain amount, etc.
